Helene Thümmel (* 1990) studied Architecture (BA) in Graz, Austria and Media Art/New Media (MA) at the School of Arts in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. Since 2010 she has been working as a stage and costume designer for theatre and film productions and is/was part of various art cooperations and associations.

As an artist, Helene Thümmel works range between analogue and digital media. She has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including in Vienna, Graz, Nova Gorica, Trbovlje, Brussels, Rijeka. In 2020/2021, Thümmel was awarded the “Auslandstipendium für bildende Kunst” (Scholarship for Abroad Project) of the City of Graz and with the “Kunstraum Stipendium“(Art Space Scholarship) of the State of Styria.

Her projects focus on space, materiality and situations. She observes the effects of the environment, logistics and organization, the relationship between a space and a body part, between a person and a building, between a group and their city. Often her works are based on historical in a social and political context.

Influenced by the theatre she works on the development of situations and circumstances using text, objects, videos, collages, photography as well as architectural solutions or installations. Currently, Helene Thümmel is encouraged in diverse theatre productions in Graz, AT. She is preparing for a research journey through the Westbalkan, taking place in April 2021, that is a continuation of her Project “Where is Tito?” Additionally, she is developing a new format, focusing on the face-to-face interaction of human in times of quarantine and pandemic. Also, she continues with the observation of interventions in public space in Nova Gorica and Gorizia within the online platform Enouno.eu.
